Presented by Jemma Alix Levy, Associate Professor of Theater, Washington and Lee University
This is a participatory physical workshop that uses bamboo sticks to quickly create bonds between performers and establish a safe working space that encourages creativity and play. It is appropriate for people with any level of performance experience (including none at all). *Please note that people with some mobility issues can participate in this workshop; however, those with significant visual impairments may find the exercises difficult.
This workshop builds on LeCoq’s stickwork as modified by Ben Crystal’s former company, Passion in Practice, and others. Through a sequence of non-speaking exercises, participants use simple bamboo sticks to build an ensemble and make discoveries about focus, physicality, status, and space. The work encourages participants to engage deeply with each other physically and emotionally but without requiring contact or personal storytelling, helping create a safe working environment that feels both intimate and freeing, regardless of the experience level of the participants, their familiarity with each other, or their comfort level with physical touch.
When: April 19, 7:15-10:15 PM
Where: The White Box Studio (2 N Main St, Harrisonburg)
Who: Studio sessions are only for actors who have performed in past staged readings or full productions, or who are cast in our current season
Silk Moth Stage produces place-based community events with new and under-produced plays at the center. Our productions are artist-centered and audience-connected. By creating a broader experience around the play, we hope to stretch the public’s conception of theater-going and reach beyond a typical theater audience.
We invite people to reconsider what a theater experience can be.
